This brief colloquium will explore some of the specifically French contributions to the understanding of the nature and growth of freedom in America. It will illustrate how certain French scholars such as Alexis de Tocqueville, Frédéric Bastiat and Jacques Maritain have penetrated beneath the superficial to deepen our appreciation of the ideas and paradoxes that have informed the tradition of liberty in the United States.
